Workshop on "Discovering Biomarkers of Diseases: A Bioinformatics Approach" March 1-3, 2017

Workshop on
"Discovering Biomarkers of Diseases: A Bioinformatics Approach"
Organized By
Biotech Park, Lucknow
Sponsored By
Department of Biotechnology Govt. of India

About the Biotech Park, Lucknow
The Biotech Park, Lucknow, located in the city of Nawabs, decorates Lucknow with a futuristic State-of-the-art facility for biotechnology-led enterprises. It is the only functional biotechnology park in North India, serving the State of Uttar Pradesh to bring biotechnology as a way of cultivating crops, living a healthy life and enriching skills for boosting the biotech industry. The Park was set up jointly by the Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India and Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of Uttar Pradesh. In a short time, it has fulfilled not only the dreams the country had in 2002 when Lucknow was declared as “Biotechnology City”, but has also enabled the State to provide a platform for the “Make in India” mission.

About the workshop
Bioinformatics, a combination of biology, mathematics and computer science, is an emerging area of science. Computational biology plays a significant role in the discovery of new biomarkers, the analysis of disease states and the validation of potential biomarkers. Biomarkers are objectively measured and evaluated as an indicator of normal biological processes, pathogenic processes or pharmacological responses to a therapeutic intervention. Biomarkers may be used to perform a clinical assessment as well as to monitor and predict health states in individuals or across populations so that appropriate therapeutic intervention can be planned. They are being exclusively developed and validated for use in drug development. Systems biology is an approach to the science that views biology as an information science, studies biological systems as a whole and their interactions with the environment. This approach has particular power in the search for informative diagnostic biomarkers of diseases as it focuses on the fundamental causes and keys on the identification and understanding of disease- perturbed molecular networks. Metabolomics is fast gaining ground as a powerful tool for biomarker discovery and as an important component of systems biology research. It offers new opportunities for biomarker discovery in complex diseases and may provide pathological understanding of diseases beyond traditional technologies. The disease biology may provide biomarkers useful for identification of early stage diseases, potentially addressing an important clinical need.

The Workshop Aims
To familiarize researchers and students with
I) In-silico bioinformatics tools and techniques for biomarker discovery, validation and implementation.
II) System Biology and Metabolomics approaches for biomarker discovery and disease pathway analysis.
The participants of the workshop will be accessing online and offline bioinformatics resources for disease pathway analysis for discovering biomarkers for study of the progress of disease, predicting treatment outcome and clinical trial. The practical knowledge gained through this Workshop will help in enhancing their skills in application of these tools in basic and industrial research.
