The Workshop:

Bioinformatics - a combination of biology, mathematics and computer science- is an emerging area of science. Biological research that earlier used to start in laboratories, fields and plant clinics now begins at the computational level using computers for (in-silico) analysis of the overwhelming data, experiment planning and hypothesis development. The various genome projects are generating, with increasing ease, vast gigabases of DNA sequences, which have stimulated the development of high-throughput assays to provide comprehensive post-genomic analysis. Computational biology is the science of using biological data to develop algorithms which, inturn are used in deciphering the structure, function and interrelationship of various biological systems.
Application of various bioinformatics tools in biological research enables storage, retrieval and annotation of genomic information and, with phylogeny, molecular modeling and visualization of results, promotes better understanding of biological systems in fullness. It also plays an important role in understanding the host-pathogen interaction, which in turn, helps in disease diagnosis.

The workshop aims:

To familiarize researchers and students with basics of Bioinformatics and its application.

The workshop would cover the following aspects:

◘ Current advances in biological databases, evolutionary bioinformatics, protein structure prediction and gene prediction.
◘ In-silico primer designing, biomarker discovery, gene silencing using RNAi technology, preparation of lead molecules for drug designing and various tools and techniques used for the same.

The participants of the workshop would be accessing online resources of macromolecule libraries, sketching chemical compounds and building 3D molecules and drug designing. They would also learn about prediction and analysis of properties of gene, protein and compounds, and structure prediction, visualization and analysis of biomolecules. The practical knowledge gained through this workshop is expected to help them in enhancing their skills in utilizing bioinformatics tools for their application in basic and industrial research.
